Circa 1871, this scented Turkish native yields slightly conical racemes of densely packed, vivid sky-blue florets. Inspect it closely: the top hat of its fertile florets is sky-blue with sterile, bead-shaped, darker sky-blue florets in the middle and slightly open, deep sky-blue florets with white eyes at the base above ample foliage clumps. Grape hyacinths are easy to grow and their flowers complement every other plant in your spring garden. The blue bells open slowly from the bottom up so the flowers last for weeks. Muscari look great wherever they're planted -- among tulips and daffodils, beneath trees and shrubs, in flower beds or in containers. They're also good naturalizers. Buy in bulk and plant generously!

How deep should I plant my fall bulbs outdoors?

The basic rule of thumb is that the hole should be at least three times as deep as the height of the bulb. Use the chart below for the required planting depth of your bulbs. Don't worry about your bulbs being planted an inch or two deeper than recommended; in most cases this provides the bulb with a little extra protection. Our packaging provides you with a variety of specific guidelines and planting tips.

Summer bulbs have varied planting requirements so make sure to consult the information we provide on our packaging for best results.

How do I force my bulbs for indoor blooms? If so, most bulbs require a certain amount of chill-time in the refrigerator before they can be forced. Eight to fifteen weeks is the general requirement. See the "Chill Chart" below for approximate chill-times for most bulbs. You should, however, follow the package directions for any bulbs you purchase. If you cut the chill-time short for any bulbs, you may get blooms, but they will probably be stunted or deformed.
