Snowy Barrenwort is used as a ground cover in shady areas. It grows 6-8 inches tall and spreads 1-1.5 feet. The heart-shaped foliage forms attractive clumps and is red-streaked in spring, green in summer and bronze-red for the fall. The pure white flowers appear in clusters on red stems in mid to late spring. The plant spreads by rhizomes. If you don't have room for a ground cover, no problem. 'Niveum' thrives in containers, rock gardens and edging borders as well. Deer and rabbits don't find it very appetizing, but butterflies love its flowers.
Common names: snowy barrenwort, young's barrenwort, white epimedium, longspur bishop's hat, bishop's cap, fairy wings
There are several species of barrenwort that are commonly used as ground covers, and longspur barrenwort is one of the showiest, due to its relatively large flowers. Other species and hybrids of barrenwort are listed at the end of this page. All of them do well in shady sites.
